  • Lassen County Approves Planning Dep't Reorganization Plan
    Posted On: Jan 07, 2015

According to an article in the Lassen County Times, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors took action at the Dec. 9 meeting to approve a reorganization of the County Planning Department. The article details efforts by County Officials to reshape the department.

According to the article, the Board of Supervisors is authorizing funding for two additional Association and Assistant Planner positions in the Department. The Board action also defunded one Planning Technician position. The article states that "over time there will be about a $70,000 increase to the planning budget".

UPEC is happy to see this bit a good news, as it appears that the County is growing, budgets are growing, and local Governments are beginning to hire more people as they see more economic activity in their areas.

However, UPEC is also concerned about any proposed reorganization of a County department. We are further alarmed that we first heard of this proposed reorganization effort through an article in the local newspaper.

Lassen County Labor Relations Representative Ryan Heron has placed an information request to the County to find out how this proposed reorganization effort will affect UPEC represented employees in Lassen County. Once more information becomes available, you can be sure that UPEC staff will be working hard to make sure that all rules and regulations are followed by the County, and that UPEC members in Lassen County will be protected from any proposals to reorganize departments that could adversely affect the wages and working conditions of our members.

This is an example of a Department and a County that was hit hard by the 2008 recession. The recovery from the great recession of 2008 has been long, slow, and harder than many had expected, but with County budgets now growing, UPEC will remain vigilant in its fight to ensure that hardworking Union members who have sacrificed so much over the last several years are taken care of with increasing budgets.
