San Francisco - UPEC 792 was recently able to work with managers at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to address ongoing safety concerns for our membership at the Park.
UPEC represents the federal employees who work at the GGNRA. These include Maintenance, Road, and Law Enforcement employees. Over the years, there have been numerous work safety issues that UPEC has worked diligently to address with GGNRA Management Officials. In the past, UPEC has addressed numerous safety concerns for our membership at the GGNRA including filing OSHA complaints over asbestos exposure and unsafe work in confined spaces. In both of those instances, OSHA found in favor of UPEC's complaints.
Most recently, UPEC has engaged in a series of meetings and discussions with GGNRA officials about safety at the Road Shop. These concerns included high levels of lead which have been found to bein the soil and in buildings around the Park. To address these issues, UPEC Stewards and Staff were able to arrange a series of meetings with Senior GGNRA Mangement to bring the concerns to their attention. To their credit, Management officlals have heard these concerns and taken them seriously. Together, the Union and Management have built a positive relationship that has enabled us to address the issues.
Steps taken to address safety concerns have included making sure the Agency provides the proper personal protective equipment, installing showers to employees to rinse off after they are exposed to potentially dangerous levels of lead, and installing washing machines at the Road Shop to clean clothing that has been exposed. UPEC is pleased that GGNRA Management Officials have taken these concerns seriously and taken the steps to address them.
UPEC will continue to work closely with GGNRA Officials to monitor this situation. Ensuring member safety is a hallmark achievement of the labor movement. Unions have been instrumental in the establishment of safety protocol at workplaces throughout America. UPEC continues this legacy by ensuring the safety of our members at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
