  • UPEC MEMBER NEWS RELEASE - Rancho Tehama Shooting
    Updated On: Nov 16, 2017

REDDING, CALIFORNIA - In the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 14, 2017 in the rural town of Rancho Tehama California, a lone gunman took the lives of 5 innocent people and injuring at least 10 more.

UPEC member Michelle McFadyen was among those shot and killed and her husband Troy has undergone surgery for gunshot wounds to both legs he suffered on Tuesday, November 14th while driving to a local store in Ranch Tehama.

According to reports, Michelle and her husband Troy McFadyen were forced off the road and into a ditch by the assailant who was driving toward them. The assailant got out of his vehicle and began shooting their vehicle before directing gunfire at the couple as they tried to flee for safety.

Michelle worked for the Children’s Services Branch (HHSA) as an Office Assistant and is a long- time employee of Shasta County. “Michelle was a kind supportive, and valued member of the team at Children’s who spent her career trying to make life better for the children we serve”, said Donnell Ewert, Director of Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency.

Michelle was a member of Laborers International Union of North America and United Public Employees of California Local 792 in Redding, California since December 2006.  She was an active participant in her Union and the Shasta County General Unit.

“This is very tragic and sad news for our Local members and UPEC staff particularly those who were close to and worked with Michelle.  I know this family can use the support and prayers of our members during this time of grief and loss.  We are praying for comfort and healing for the McFadyen family and for all the victims and first responders of the Rancho Tehama shooting incident. Our Union will do everything we can to support the McFadyen family through their time of loss”, said Chris Darker, Business Manager of UPEC Local 792.
