OLD SHASTA - Labor Representative Dave Ritchie meet with the State Mediator and the General Manager for the Shasta Community Services District (SCSD) to review and post the Election Agreement. District employees will be able to vote on whether they want UPEC to represent them on December 1st.
REDDING - UPEC has selected the Holiday Inn in Redding for the 2009 Leadership Conference. The Conference will begin with the 1st Annual UPEC Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday, June 26, 2009. The golf tournament will be held at Gold Hills Golf Course in North Redding beginning with lunch at 12:00 noon. This event will be followed by an evening reception at the course. The Leadership sessions will begin Saturday, June 27th at 8:30 am.
Monterey - The General Employees of Monterey will have an opportunity to cash in on their membership for signing up fellow employees to join their Union. Several of the staff of the United Public Employees of California Local 792 have arranged six opportunities for members to meet the staff that represent and negotiate the GEM collective bargaining agreement with the City of Monterey. “We think that it is important for members and non-members to meet with the staff and learn more about what our union does for the members”, stated Business Manager Chris Darker. UPEC is trying to grow the membership in preparation for future bargaining. “Bargaining a contract is not easy right now. We are working to keep what has been previously negotiated and make some forward progress and maximizing the membership count is a key factor for success”, stated Senior Labor Representative Steve Allen. UPEC negotiates 63 contracts from Monterey to Yreka California. UPEC will be providing benefit and other union information and refreashments at seven (7) meetings from Monday, November 17 - 19th in Monterey. Members and Non-Members can meet the staff at the Monterey Public Library 11:30 - 1:30pm M-W and Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00pm. On Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00pm at Ryan Ranch Corporation Yard, Street Break Room. The last meeting will be a Grand Finale at Montrio’s Bristro (upstairs) from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The Bistro is at 414 Calle Principal in Monterey. There will be cash recruitment awards and raffle prizes for members. Members will received information in the mail today or tomorrow. Redding - LIUNA Education Department head Mitch Warrren accepted the Strategic Planning concept that UPEC Local 792 has used for nearly a decade. Business Manager Chris Darker has been asked to teach the twelve (12) hour Strategic Planning class for LIUNA Business Managers at the National Labor College in January 2009. The class brings Business Managers together both from construction and public sector locals to create a plan they can take back to their local union and get started immediately. “Planning and delegation is essential for our local unions to be successful and to grow. All of us must set goals and accomplish them together”, said Darker.
REDDING - Business Manager Chris Darker announced this morning that donations for RPD Officer Jason Rhoads family are being accepted at the UPEC office. In a tragic accident yesterday, Officer Rhoads 4 year old son was fatally wounded. The matter is under investigation by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department and Redding Police Department. “My family and our union family stand ready to assist in any way we can”, stated Darker.
