Wisc. Supreme Court Ruling: ‘Affront to Democracy’
Tuesday, June 28, 2011
UCS News Service-As expected, the Wisconsin Supreme Court threw out a lower court ruling invalidating the controversial law gutting collective bargaining that was passed earlier this year by the Republican-led legislature and pushed by Gov. Scott Walker (R). The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO blasted the ruling as an “affront to democracy.”
The only surprise about mid-June’s 4-3 ruling by the conservative-dominated court was the speed with which they moved, taking the case and deciding it on the same day. It was a move dissenting Justice Shirley Abrahamson called “ridiculous.”
“The inability of the Wisconsin Supreme Court to separate partisan politics from the well-being of Wisconsinites is the latest indication that citizens do not have a voice in this state,” said Phil Neuenfeldt, President of the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO. “The only way for Wisconsinites to repair that voice is to take back the Senate this summer, stop Walker’s unbridled assault on working people and take back the statehouse in 2012,” he said.
